Holocaust Remembrance Day marks the January 27, 1945 liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi concentration camp. In 2005, the United Nations General Assembly designated this day to remember the 6 million Jewish people who died during the horrendous genocide.
Images from the Jan. 6th insurrection of the Capitol emphasized one thing: hate has never left our country. This year's day of remembrance carries a weightier presence– that much more we must remember.
In addition to remembering the lives lost, we also honor those who paved the way for us in doing the good work and included their stories within the pages of the grand narrative. The Japanese-American soldiers of the 552nd Field Artillery Battalion, part of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, rescued Jewish survivors of a Dachau sub-camp and death marches. What made the 442nd Regimental Combat Team unique? It was the only unit in the U.S. armed forces during WWII whose enlisted men were all of Japanese ancestry.
